Pediatric Medications
Parents find it confusing to know what their child is being given and why with most pediatric drugs having long and complicated names. This is a list of commonly prescribed medications for children. You can have a better idea what your child is ingesting by looking at the list of drugs we have described in this post.
American Integrative Pharmacy (AIP), led by Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides safe and proven compounding medications to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes, Southern California areas, and online nationwide.
Amoxicillin
This is the most commonly prescribed pediatric medication. It is an inexpensive antibiotic that is well-tolerated by most patients. The medicine is administered for treating:
- Ear infections
- Sinus infections
- Strep throat
- Childhood pneumonia
Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid
Antibiotic amoxicillin is combined with potassium clavulanate in this medication. Potassium clavulanate is an enzyme which helps the antibiotic better fight harmful and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The medication is used for treating the same conditions as amoxicillin. However, it may also be prescribed for killing bacteria in mouth infections and infected bites.
Albuterol
This consists of a drug called bronchodilator, which is used for treating respiratory issues by widening the air passages in bronchi or lungs. The medication is prescribed for relieving asthma symptoms. It is generally administered through a nebulizer or a metered-dose inhaler.
Cephalexin
Cephalexin is also an antibiotic like many other commonly prescribed pediatric medications. It can be taken in a tablet, capsule, or oral suspension form for treating respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections (impetigo), and urinary tract infections.
Azithromycin
Azithromycin is another antibiotic that is generally prescribed for ear infections. The medication is available as an oral suspension (liquid), eye drops, and tablet form.
Fluticasone
Fluticasone is used in different medications as a steroid. It can be prescribed as a cream, ointment, or a nasal spray depending on the base it is combined with. The medication is used for treating eczema, asthma, and allergies.
Ibuprofen
This is a NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) which is used for treating pain, fevers, and inflammation. The medication is available as an over-the-counter drug for children in the form of Advil or Motrin. You can also find it prescription strength for treating certain conditions.
Cefdinir
Cefdinir is sold under the brand name Omnicef and is used for treating ear infections, sinus infections and pneumonia. The antibiotic is not the first line of medication prescribed by pediatricians.
Montelukast Sodium/Singulair
This drug is used for reliving symptoms of seasonal allergies and treating asthma. It is available as a type of drug known as leukotriene inhibitor. The medication can lessen or prevent the body’s reactions to numerous allergens.
Prednisone
This medication is used for treating croup, asthma flare-ups, and allergic reactions for things, such as poison ivy. The medication is prescribed for a short period in small dosages
