Lyme Disease Medications

Comprehensive and Customized Compounds to Help You Fight Lyme Disease

Once believed to be a problem only for those living in the woods of New England, we now know that Lyme disease is far more common and more prevalent than originally thought. Indeed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has tracked cases of Lyme disease in all 50 states, and while approximately 28,000 cases are officially reported every year, CDC officials estimate that the real number of Lyme cases may be 10 times higher.

Accurate statistics regarding Lyme disease are difficult to compile because this vector-borne illness is notoriously difficult both to diagnose and to treat. Yet we believe that with the correct treatment plan, relief from Lyme is possible. At American Integrative Pharmacy, our goal is to work closely with you and your physician to develop a comprehensive, customized, effective treatment plan. Our precise compounds utilizing only the highest-quality ingredients are designed to alleviate, not aggravate, your symptoms while enabling you to live your life free of this potentially crippling illness.

What is Lyme disease and why is it so problematic?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection in which a spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) is transmitted through the bite of a deer tick (although we now know that Lyme can also be spread by mosquitos, sand flies, gnats, and other biting insects). In some, but not all, cases, the bite may cause a tell-tale “bullseye” ring, the leading indicator of Lyme. Unfortunately, however, the vast majority of tick bites are painless, go undetected, and do not cause a ring or rash. Indeed, most patients diagnosed with Lyme never recall seeing or feeling a tick or a tick bite.

In the absence of a tell-tale rash, diagnosing Lyme can be extremely difficult because symptoms are diffuse, widespread, and mimic other well-known diseases. Symptoms are often mistaken for fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, bipolar disorder, ALS, Alzheimer’s, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s, and even autism. When Lyme is suspected, testing is difficult: patients can be symptomatic for many months before Lyme antibodies can be detected, and the false negative for the most common antibody tests are extremely high (50-70%). And unfortunately, when left undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, Lyme can become a chronic, hard-to-treat illness that can significantly undermine long-term health and wellness.

Compounding solutions for Lyme disease

Treating Lyme disease requires a comprehensive, specialized approach that incorporates both traditional antibiotics and more holistic remedies to manage symptoms. Although Lyme is a bacterial infection, it is highly resistant to routine antibiotics; most physicians will prescribe a cocktail of synergistic antibiotics, sometimes combined with other anti-Lyme agents such as antifungals, immune modulators, and anticoagulants to improve the ability of the antibiotics to fight the infection. Because the specific medicinal requirements are highly dependent on the patient and his or her illness and symptoms, it is critical that we create a highly personalized cocktail of medications that can be adjusted as the treatment begins to take effect.

Our approach to Lyme is designed to be comprehensive, incorporating relief from symptoms as well as simply seeking “a cure.” Therefore, our customized compounds can incorporate nutritional and vitamin supplements, hormonal therapies, and even pain relief. And because we use the highest-quality ingredients, each specific compound can be made without dyes and preservatives that may aggravate GI symptoms and impede the effectiveness of the medications.
