Use of Topical Ketorolac, Gabapentin, Cyclobenzaprin, and Lidocaine in Joint and Neuropathic Pain

TOPICAL PAIN RELIEF

Topical pain relief can be more than just a temporary fix to ease a patient’s pain. Constant joint or tissue pain prompts the inflammatory response which in turn may cause the pain to persist and result in more severe inflammation.  To eradicate the cause of pain, the pain itself needs to be relieved first.

KETOROLAC:

Topical NSAIDs work by reaching the joint fluid (synovia) and decreasing inflammatory proteins such as prostaglandins. They are highly effective and studies have shown them to be almost as effective as when taken orally with significantly less CNS and gastrointestinal side effects.

Long-term use of topical Ketorolac may still expose patients to kidney function damage, so physicians should have that in mind when prescribing it for joint or neuropathic pain treatment.

GABAPENTIN:

The anti-epileptic drug, Gabapentin is also used to treat neuropathic pain.  It is beneficial for the treatment of shingles and for diabetic neuropathy.  It will also offer benefits in joint pain treatment to a lesser degree by calming the nerves around the joints.

CYCLOBENZAPRIN:

This muscle relaxant works by blocking the sensation of pain (nerve impulses) from progressing to the brain.  Beneficial in joint pain as well as neuropathic pain, however, caution should be exercised when prescribed to patients with thyroid disorder, CHF, Heart Block, Rhythmic problems with the heart, or recent history of MI.

LIDOCAINE:

Very effective in treating joint pain as well as pain due to nerve damage such as diabetic neuropathy or post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Lidocaine’s systemic side effects are not a concern when it is applied topically.  Use of Menthol along with topical Lidocaine will drive the Lidocaine deep into the problem area and help the body to heal and repair itself, therefore it goes further than just numbing the pain.
