The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tadalafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in the US in 2003. This medication is also used in the treatment of arterial hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia (a condition where the prostate gland becomes enlarged, leading to issues in urination).

How it Works

Cialis is a commonly tadalafil product used to treat erectile dysfunction or ED. A man attains an erection when the penis fills with blood. This occurs as the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis dilate, enhancing the blood supply.

At the same time, the blood vessels that remove blood from the penis constrict. The blood collects in the penis, and this leads to an erection.

Upon becoming sexually stimulated, the male body releases nitric oxide into the penis. Nitric oxide facilitates the production of cGMP, which manages the dilation and constriction of the blood vessels that supply blood to and from the penis.

PDE5 is another substance that destructs cGMP. When this happens, the blood vessels return to their normal size, and the erection ends. Tadalafil prevents PDE5 from destructing cGMP, which helps the erection sustain for a longer period.

PDE5 is also found in the muscles of the arteries in the walls of the lungs. Due to this reason, the same medication can be used in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

Benefits

Cialis is available in film-coated, yellow, and almond-shaped tablets in 5, 10 and 20 milligram (mg) doses.

Patients with ED can take Cialis as necessary. However, it should not be taken more often than once every 24 hours.

This medication will work only when a man is sexually aroused. The drug cannot help a man attain an erection in the absence of sexual stimulation.

The initial dose of 10 mg should be taken at least 30 minutes prior to sexual activity. Depending on how the patient responds, the dosage can be adjusted. A single dose can be a maximum of 20 mg.

The patient should not take more than one dose within a 24 hour period. However, a daily dose of 10 mg to 20 mg is not recommended. The reason for this is that remnant of the medication remains in the body for at least 24 hours.  

Patients who are sexually active at least twice weekly can take a daily dose of 5 mg. Depending on the patient’s response, the doctor may reduce this dose to 2.5 mg once daily.

Tadalafil for ED is only for use by adults who are 18 years of age or older.

Side Effects

Taking tadalafil or Cialis along with nitrate drugs can lead to a serious and sudden decrease in blood pressure (hypotension). Men using a nitrate medication prescription for heart conditions or chest pains should not take tadalafil.

Priapism is a condition in which the erection lasts for more than four hours. This can be damaging to the penis. Patients should seek prompt medical attention if this occurs.
