Study: Fibromyalgia Symptoms Are Reduced By Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN)

Fibromyalgia Symptom LDN Prescription

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder marked by musculoskeletal pain and sensitivity to physical stimulation. Millions of people suffer from fibromyalgia and find it hard to overcome the condition because of a lack of successful commercial drugs. However, a compounding pharmacy may be able to offer low dose Naltrexone (LDN), which could work well to improve the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

American Integrative Pharmacy (AIP), led by Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides safe and proven compounding medications to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and online nationwide.

Research Shows Benefits of LDN for Fibromyalgia Patients

A pilot study conducted by Jarred Younger, PhD and Dr. Sean Mackey, PhD, School of Medicine, Division of Pain Management at Stanford University has shown that fibromyalgia symptoms may be reduced with low dose Naltrexone (LDN). The study tested the efficacy of LDN in treated the specific symptoms of fibromyalgia.

The participants in the study included 10 female patients who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and were not taking any opioids. The participants completed a single-blind trial where the LDN drug was administered to them for eight weeks. At low doses (4.5 mg), this drug naltrexone might reverse peripheral and central inflammation and inhibit the microglia activity.

As part of the study, the participants reported the severity of their symptoms every day through online messaging. Moreover, the participants visited the research lab every two weeks for tests of pain sensitivity to mechanical stimulation, and cold and heat.

Results of the Study

The study showed that low dose Naltrexone reduced the symptoms of fibromyalgia in the entire group of participants. The reduction of symptoms was found to be higher than 30 percent. Moreover, the visits to the research lab showed that the patients’ pain thresholds for sensitivity to mechanical, heat and cold improved after the drug.

Side effects of LDN were rare, and patients described them as transient and minor. The researchers concluded that low dose Naltrexone could be effective, affordable, and highly tolerable treatment for fibromyalgia.

Determining the Precise Low Dose

One of the important aspects for clinicians is to determine what is the right “low” dose of Naltrexone for a particular patient? Dose finding research studies should be conducted to determine what may be the optimal low dose for patients of fibromyalgia. An experienced compounding pharmacy will be able to customize the low dose medication according the patient’s unique needs.

In cases where the doctor wants to prescribe LDN treatment for fibromyalgia to a patient, they should inform the patient in advance that this is still an experimental therapy. This will ensure that the patient is aware of the potential risks. Once the patient has a prescription for low dose Naltrexone therapy, they can present it to a compounding pharmacy where the drug can be formulated in the required low dosage form.

AIP provides advanced compounding pharmacy solutions, including online prescription refills to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and online nationwide.
