Chronic Pain Treatment with LDN

Chronic nerve pain conditions, such as CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome), RSD (regional pain syndrome), and RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) are primarily autoimmune based conditions. Researchers now have some understanding that low dose Naltrexone (LDN) helps in the treatment of autoimmune conditions.

American Integrative Pharmacy (AIP), led by Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides safe and proven compounding medications to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and online nationwide.

How does LDN work to Treat Chronic Pain?

According to researchers, LDN by its ability to inhibit the microglial activation manages to suppress the triggering of NMDA receptors. LDN reduces the release of glutamate neurotransmitter, which helps in cutting back the pain signals to the brain. The ideal use of LDN for managing chronic pain is for patients who are not using opioids, or who want to reduce their dependence on opioids.

However, patients who are using opioids to manage chronic pain may have to avoid the use of LDN, according to some researchers. The advantage of LDN in comparison to opioids is that LD has much lower risks, low side effect profile, and does not have addictive properties.

But before prescribing LDN for chronic pain, doctors should consider the available research studies, outcomes of clinical trials, and various anecdotal reports from past patients. The prescribing doctor should also assess the patient’s severity of chronic pain condition, response to other treatments as well as drug interactions and contraindications, if any.

Efficacy of LDN to Relieve Chronic Pain Symptoms

Research studies show that LDN may not produce immediate pain relief, and may take several weeks for the results to show. Over a longer period of time, such as nine months to a year, most patients have reported a significant improvement in their chronic pain symptoms with the use of LDN.

Researchers say that LDN will work to slow down or stop the progression of the chronic pain disease. Additionally, the pain symptoms may be alleviated. Improvements noted with LDN therapy include reduction in pain exacerbation, symptomatic improvement, improvement of function, and better acceptance and tolerance of any residual pain.

Research studies indicate that the use of LDN may lead to an increased level of endorphin production in the body.  (Endorphins are natural hormones that neutralize the pain.) This can create a feeling of comfort and well-being.

Human trials with LDN have shown improvement in the patient’s quality of life, stress levels and mood scores. This particularly helps patients who are suffering from CRPS or RSD pain conditions where stress can contribute to exacerbations. Researchers also believe that when Naltrexone is administered at very tiny doses, it is unlikely to cause any harm to the patient’s health.

Compounding LDN

Commercial drug manufacturers produce Naltrexone usually as 50 mg pills. But a chronic pain patient may benefit from low dose Naltrexone of up to 5 mg a day. An experienced compounding pharmacy can prepare LDN in any small dose prescribed by physician. It may help more if the pharmacy produces LDN in formulations for instant release rather than slow or timed release.

AIP provides advanced compounding pharmacy solutions, including online prescription refills to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and online nationwide.
