Pediatric Medication: Cefdinir

Pediatric Medication: Cefdinir

Cefdinir for Children

Cefdinir is used for treating a broad range of bacterial infections. The medication is also known as cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by effectively stopping antibiotic growth. Cefdinir is only effective on bacterial infections and doesn’t work on viral infections, such as flu or the common cold.

American Integrative Pharmacy (AIP), led by Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides safe and dependable compounding medications to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes, Southern California areas, and online nationwide.

Cefdinir Dosing

Dosing is different for different patients. You should follow the directions on the label and your doctor’s orders. You should not change the dosing unless your doctor expressly tells you to. The amount of Cefdinir prescribed depends on the strength of the medication. In addition, the time allowed between two doses, number of doses prescribed in a day, and the length of prescribed medication depends on your particular medical condition.

This is the recommended dosing for infections in oral dosage forms, such as suspension and capsules.

  • Infants until 6 months of age: Your doctor should determine the use and dose.
  • Infants and children from 6 months to 12 years: Dosage will be based on the child’s body weight. It should be determined by the doctor. Recommended dose is generally 7mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours. It can also be taken as 14mg for every kg of body weight every 24 hours. This will be prescribed for 5 – 10 days.
  • Teenagers and adults: 600mg once a day or 30mg twice daily for 5 – 10 days.

Proper Usage of Cefdinir

This antibiotic should only be taken as directed by the doctor. Never take more of Cefdinir. You should not take for a longer duration as directed by the doctor or more often during the day. The medication can be taken with or without food as desired.

If taking oral form, shake the bottle well before each dosage. You should use an oral syringe, measuring spoon, or a medicine cup for measuring the drug. You may not get the right dose if you use an average household teaspoon. Don’t take magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, multivitamins, and iron supplements along with Cefdinir.

Make sure you space other medications at least two hours before or after your Cefdinir dose. Other medications can prevent Cefdinir from performing its job properly. You should complete the dosage as instructed by the doctor even if your child begins feeling better after the first few doses. An infection may not clear up if Cefdinir is stopped before its time.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next one. In this case you should go back to your regular dosage as per schedule. Never take more than a single dose to make up for the missed one.

Storing Cefdinir

Keep the medication away from children. You should store it in a closed container at room temperature. It should be away from direct light, heat, or moisture.
