Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has several therapeutic benefits being an essential oil. It has antiseptic and antifungal properties among its many healing benefits. This makes it an effective treatment option for nail fungus.

Tea tree oil was found to reduce the growth of Trichophyton rubrum (a type of fungus) in nail infections as per a study published in 2013. T. rubrum can cause nail fungus and athlete’s foot among other diseases. Improvements were noticed after just 2 weeks of application.

The study was conducted as a test tube experiment using an in vitro model. This means that humans and animals were not used as a test subject. According to a small 1999 study, it was found that participants could successfully manage toenail fungus by topically applying a cream containing butenafine hydrochloride and tea tree oil.

Eighty percent of participants managed to cure their toenail fungus after just 16 weeks of treatment without any relapses. Pure tea tree oil was found to be as effective as Desenex (clotrimazole) as per a 1994 study in treating toenail fungus.

Ketoconazole Topical

Ketoconazole is useful in treating skin infections, like athlete’s foot, nail fungus, ringworm, jock itch, and certain dandruff types. It is also useful in treating pityriasis (tinea versicolor). This is a skin condition or fungal infection that causes the skin of the chest, neck, legs, and arms to develop a different color tone. Ketoconazole prevents the growth of fungus by acting as an antifungal.

This medication is meant only for topical application. You would need to clean the area thoroughly and dry it before applying the cream. It is recommended to use the medication 1 to 2 times a day or as directed by the doctor.

Length of treatment and dosage depends purely on the infection type being treated. You should not apply this cream more often than prescribed as that may increase the risk of side effects. Make sure to apply enough medication to cover the affected area.

DMSO

DMSO has been used by compounding pharmacies for a long time in mixing formulations for treating toenail fungus. DMSO acts as a driving agent and doesn’t necessarily kill the fungus on its own. It helps other ingredients permeate tough surfaces, such as nails.

DMSO is usually paired with fluconazole and other antifungal agents. Fluconazole is available as an over-the-counter medication. However, its efficacy is increased when it is combined with DMSO for clearing up a fungus.

DMSO works as the key to allow other ingredients to access the fungus. It helps the actual antifungal target the fungus directly and eradicate it at the root level.
