Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) Therapy Can Help Treat Patients With Irritable Bowel

Irritable Bowel Treatment with LDN

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a type of digestive disorder, which can have a major impact on your quality of life. People with IBS report constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps among other digestive symptoms. A plethora of symptoms are also experienced by some people, such as poor social functioning and generalized body pain.

Doctors are not yet sure about the causes behind IBS. However, there are several factors that play a role in this condition. People with IBS may require different diets, medications, and lifestyle strategies for managing their symptoms in an effective fashion. Certain treatment strategies may work for some patients and not for others.

American Integrative Pharmacy (AIP), led by Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides safe and proven compounding medications to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and online nationwide.

LDN for IBS

Low dose naltrexone or LDN has powerful immune modulating effects. It has the potential to help patients affected by inflammatory bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease are the two major types of IBD. These can result in debilitating complications, which can leave a patient with low quality of life.

There are certain prescription medicines that can result in improved quality of life and decreased symptoms, but these come at the cost of extensive side effects, which can be intolerable to patients. You may benefit from LDN therapy even though the medication is not meant to replace conventional prescription medications for treating UC and Crohn’s.

Research Regarding LDN

An open label pilot study performed on Crohn’s patients found that 89% responded to receiving 4.5mg of low dose naltrexone once per day during bedtime. The study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology also found that 67% patients benefited from a remission in symptoms. You should note that LDN in this study was added to current medication therapy.

In another systematic review looking at two studies involving adults and pediatric patients, respectively, successful results were found. Both adults and pediatric patients were given a dose of 4.5mg of naltrexone. This is the gold standard when it comes to low dose naltrexone.

Results of the Study

Each study resulted in promising outcomes after giving the patients low dose naltrexone for easing the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease. For instance, the study with adult patients showed improvements in 83% people receiving low dose naltrexone. This is on a 70-point clinical response rate scale as opposed to 38% patients that received the placebo drug.

In addition, 72% patients achieved endoscopic response when 25% patients were given a placebo. The bottom line in both studies is that no patient reported any serious side effects. Patients did not drop out of the study as well. However, it’s imperative to note that the author of the review stated that no firm conclusions could be drawn. But, patient response shows that LDN can help patients suffering from irritable bowel diseases.
