Hair Tonic (menstruating women)

Hair Tonic (menstruating women)

Some of hair restoration compounding medications may be specially formulated for menstruating women. The provider may be able to customize a hair tonic according to the specific needs and hair condition of a patient.

American Integrative Pharmacy (AIP), led by Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides safe and proven compounding treatments to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and in every state in the US.

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid

Para-aminobenzoic acid is also known as PABA. It is a naturally occurring amino acid that has been researched for hair loss treatment.

More clinical research is required before concluding its efficacy in the treatment of hair loss. PABA is usually indicated to be safe for topical use in a concentration of 1 to 15 percent in menstruating women. But some people, especially children, may be hypersensitive to its use.

Zinc

The ancient Egyptians used zinc formulations to improve the healing in wounds. Some studies trying to establish the efficacy of oral zinc have found different outcomes.

Zinc is usually believed to be safe when taken at suggested dosages. Zinc does appear to be safe when taken during pregnancy in quantities that are lower than the determined upper intake level. However, the patient should exercise caution.

Onion Juice

Topical onion juice application on alopecia areata patients, especially menstruating women, has shown to enhance hair re-growth.

Patients who are allergic or hypersensitive to onion (allium cepa), its components, or members of the Liliaceae family should avoid this treatment. Patients with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), hematologic (blood) disorders, diabetes, and hypotension (low blood pressure) should use it carefully.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens or Sabal serrulata) is widely used in Europe for the treatment of the symptoms of enlarged prostate. It is considered that saw palmetto might decrease inherited male-pattern hair loss as well as hair loss for menstruating women in the same manner as the drug finasteride (Propecia). Pregnant or nursing women should avoid using saw palmetto.

Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral which is found in water, soil, and certain foods. Studies indicate that shampoos that contain selenium may help treat dandruff.

Some commercially available products also include selenium. Patients who are allergic or sensitive to products with selenium, as well as patients with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer, should avoid using them. Generally, selenium is considered safe for pregnant and nursing women.

Tea Tree Oil

The tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is a small tree with tiny, soft, alternate leaves and yellowish bottlebrush-shaped flowers. It belongs to a family of over 30 species of paperbark trees growing across Australia. The steam distillation of tea tree leaves yields tea tree oil.

Initial studies indicate that the use of 5 percent tea tree oil shampoo on mild to moderate dandruff may be well-tolerated and helpful. More research is required to verify these results. Patients with a history of eczema should use tea tree oil carefully. This medication should not be taken by mouth. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid its use.

Thymus Extract

Some nutritional supplements contain thymus extracts typically taken from young calves (bovine). Apart from being used as a hair tonic for menstruating women, this extract is also useful in the treatment of bone marrow failure, hepatitis, chemotherapy side effects, primary immunodeficiencies, recurrent viral and bacterial infections, autoimmune disorders, chronic skin diseases, allergies, and cancer.
