In 1987, Dr. William T. Harvey became a victim of a debilitating disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Dr. Harvey believes a bacterium, Borellia burgdorferia, caused the symptoms he experienced. He says that just like ALS, some other illnesses such as chronic Lyme disease, Gulf War syndrome, fibromyalgia or Agent Orange syndrome, and even multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s receive varied responses from medical professionals.
Some professionals suggest that their problem isn’t physical, and that the pain is only in their minds. Dr. Harvey had similar experiences about his disease, and he decided to find ways to heal himself. He attended a medical conference in 1999 on Lyme disease, which causes similar symptoms. At the conference he learned the use of oral antibiotics in treating Lyme disease. That is when he started treating his condition with high doses of antibiotics to whether it would help him too.
He gradually came out of the disease. Towards the end, he took antibiotics in even larger doses through a catheter and managed to achieve complete recovery. Dr. Harvey’s wife too had experienced similar symptoms and was bed-ridden for 12 years. He continues to treat her with antibiotics, and she is now mostly well and highly functional.
Treatments for such complex conditions may also be found in compounding pharmacy where standard commercial drugs do not provide relief. American Integrative Pharmacy provides advanced compounding solutions to patients in Long Beach , Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas and nationwide.
During the course of his research, Dr. Harvey identified Borellia and another bacterium, Babesia, as the agents of the disease which had afflicted him. In the last four years, he has treated more than 900 patients, out of which nearly 300 have completed therapy, and their symptoms have not returned.
One of his patients was another physician, David Martz, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2003 and had to retire from his practice. Dr. Martz came in contact with Dr. Harvey, who put him on a high dose IV antibiotic treatment. The recovery in case of Dr. Martz happened faster than in the case of previous patients. Following an intensive treatment for six months, Dr. Martz says that 75 to 80 percent of normalcy had been restored.
According to Dr. Harvey, now a year after Dr. Martz started his antibiotic therapy, a neurologist specializing in the disease has declared him symptom-free of ALS. AIP offers innovative compounding treatments, including online prescription refills to patients in Long Beach , Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas and nationwide.
Skeptics say that few people in the neurological community would accept that diseases such as ALS and MS occur due to Lyme disease or Borellia bacterium. Dr. Harvey admits that his work has not been a scientific study, but he has simply been treating patients.
Dr. Harvey is now based out of his vacation home in Texas, where he spends a large part of his time writing about Borellia and Babesia and organizing a database to be shared with other doctors.
