Curcumin Supplements – The Active Ingredient in Turmeric – Could Help Treat Arthritis

Curcumin Supplements - Turmeric Could Help Treat Arthritis | LomitaIn the US, arthritis is a common condition. There are various forms of arthritis, and a majority of these include joint inflammation.

There is a logical argument that curcumin compounding pharmacy supplements may help with arthritis because it is a natural but powerful anti-inflammatory.

Several research studies now support this theory. In one study, curcumin proved to be even more effective than the traditional anti-inflammatory medications for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Various studies have been carried out to understand the impact of curcumin on arthritis and researchers have noted improvements in many symptoms.

American Integrative Pharmacy, led by the accomplished Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides safe and proven compounding treatments to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas and nationwide.

Reduction of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Symptoms

Recent research indicates that curcumin, which is an active ingredient in turmeric, may be beneficial in alleviating RA symptoms. Curcumin has shown to have the following properties:

  • Antioxidant
  • Neuroprotective
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Anticancer

RA prompts the defense system of the body to attack itself. Curcumin contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that may help in the remission of this condition. Keep reading to understand if this spice can help with your RA symptoms and how you can include it in your diet.

Curcumin for RA symptoms: Research Study

Inflammation is not inhibited by turmeric itself. In fact, it is the active chemical curcumin found in turmeric that researchers are interested in. Research indicates that curcumin inhibits specific cytokines and enzymes that cause inflammation. This fact points towards the potential of curcumin as a complementary RA treatment.

Researchers assigned curcumin supplements to one-third of 45 people in a small 2012 study. The other two groups took a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known as diclofenac or a combination of curcumin and diclofenac.

The group that displayed the most improvement was the one that took 400 mg of curcumin only. The results of these studies may be promising. However, more significant trials are required to achieve clarity on the beneficial impact of curcumin on RA.

Turmeric is considered safe in its natural form, and this supplement could be an ideal addition to a person’s diet. Curcumin may be beneficial for depression, inflammatory diseases, and cancer. In people with RA, these conditions are common.

Curcumin as a Supplement

The easiest way to introduce curcumin into your diet is through curcumin capsules and supplements. Several supplements also have extra components such as black pepper (piperine) to improve absorption.

The Arthritis Foundation recommends a dosage of 500 mg of curcumin two times daily. It is important to consult your physician prior to taking supplements. Curcumin supplements may interfere with certain types of medications. Inform your physician of all the supplements and herbs that you may be taking.
