Causes And Treatment of Low Testosterone

Causes And Treatment of Low Testosterone | Lomita CompoundingTestosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a regimen of testosterone hormone prescribed by a physician for treating hypogonadic (low testosterone) symptoms. Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone (androgen), but the female body also naturally produces testosterone in smaller amounts.

Testosterone is produced and regulated collectively by the glands and organs forming the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Testicular-Axis (HPTA).

It is responsible for the normal growth and development of male sex organs. American Integrative Pharmacy (AIP), led by Dr. Neema Yazdanpanah, provides TRT to patients in Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and all the way from one ocean to the other across the fruited plain.

Uses of TRT

Testosterone hormone plays a fundamental role in controlling libido, mood, energy levels, bone density, cognitive functions such as memory and concentration as well as secondary sex characteristics, such as voice change, muscle mass, bodily hair growth, and fat distribution.

TRT uses testosterone to restore deficient endogenous levels of testosterone by either elevating the total levels of hormone back into the normal range, or by increasing the levels of hormone high enough to fall within the normal range for reversing negative hypogonadic symptoms. However, similar to the use of any other medication, there are certain risks and benefits in using testosterone in TRT.

Causes of Low Testosterone

Testosterone deficiency is primarily caused when the HPTA is not working properly. This malfunctioning of HPTA leads to a condition known as hypogonadism which may occur due to any of three fundamental hypogonadic conditions:

  • Primary hypogonadism, which results from a complication within the testicles
  • Secondary hypogonadism, which results from a complication within the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus
  • Idiopathic hypogonadism, with an unknown cause

These three forms of hypogonadic conditions typically occur due to Klinefelter syndrome, undescended testicles, hemochromatosis, cancer treatment, testicular trauma, mumps orchitis, pituitary disorders, Kallmann syndrome, inflammatory disease, HIV/AIDS, obesity, andropause, chronic illness, cardiovascular problems, alcoholism, chronic stress, cirrhosis, diabetes, or some types of medications.

Types of Treatment

An ideal testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) creates and maintains physiologic serum concentrations of the testosterone hormone and its active metabolites without causing any safety concerns or significant side effects.

Oral Testosterone

Oral agents may result in elevations in liver function tests. They may also cause abnormalities at liver scan or biopsy. Unmodified testosterone is quickly absorbed by the liver, making it difficult to achieve satisfactory serum concentrations.

Intramuscular Injections (IM)

Testosterone preparations in the form of IM are injected directly into the muscle, and quickly absorbed into the bloodstream through the capillaries. This preparation is extremely popular for its highly accurate dosing, insignificant hepatotoxicity levels, and varying time release qualities.

Testosterone is approved by the FDA for treating hypogonadism associated with conditions which include the failure of the testicles in producing testosterone because of genetic problems or chemotherapy. Other examples where testosterone can be used include problems with brain structures, known as the hypothalamus and pituitary, which primarily control the production of testosterone by the testicles.

Noteworthy and outstanding AIP receives patients from Long Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles, South Bay Orange County, Southern California areas, and in every state in the country for TRT and various other treatments.
