Some quick facts on amoxicillin are as follows:

  • It can address bacterial infections but not viral conditions.
  • Amoxicillin, along with other drugs, can help treat certain stomach ulcers.
  • Common side-effects of this medication include candidiasis, diarrhea, and discoloration of teeth.
  • Amoxicillin locates the bacteria and prevents them from proliferating by not allowing them to form cell walls. This eliminates the bacteria and addresses the infection.
  • Amoxicillin, as well as other antibiotics, are not effective in the treatment of viral infections such flu and colds.
  • Patients should always inform the physician about their present health condition and history prior to starting amoxicillin.

Uses of Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections. The conditions that amoxicillin can address are:

  • Typhoid
  • Bronchitis
  • Gonorrhea
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Ear infection
  • Tonsillitis
  • Lyme disease
  • Throat infections
  • Pneumonia

Amoxicillin is not useful in the treatment of flu viruses or a common cold. If amoxicillin is taken for these conditions, it heightens the risk of developing resistance to antibiotics as well as further infections.

Other Uses

Amoxicillin, along with another antibiotic known as clarithromycin, can treat stomach ulcers due to H. pylori bacterial infection.

Furthermore, these medications along with lansoprazole are helpful in reducing stomach acid and the symptoms of acid reflux.

Medical practitioners prescribe amoxicillin at times to prevent chlamydia in pregnant women, heart problems, prevent bacterial infections in newborn infants, or safeguard the heart valve after a surgery.

An “off-label” use of amoxicillin is in the treatment of anthrax. This medication should only be used “off-label” (for purposes not stated) if a prescribed by a medical professional.

How is Amoxicillin taken?

Patients can intake amoxicillin orally as a dry tablet, a capsule, a chewable tablet, and drops for children, or in a liquid form.

Depending on the physician’s instructions, amoxicillin can be taken two times a day, every 12 hours, three times daily, or every eight hours.

The medication can be taken with or without food. In the liquid form, amoxicillin can be mixed with liquids such as fruit juice, baby formula, water, and milk.

The patient should ensure that the medication is shaken thoroughly before use if it is in the liquid form. This enables the medicine to be distributed evenly.

Capsules and tablets should be taken with water. The patient must properly chew the chewable tablets before swallowing.

It is essential that the patient follows the exact frequency and dosage as directed by the medical care provider.
